A bumblebee has a brain the size of a sesame seed.
I came across this while researching one of our upcoming summer holiday missions, and it stopped me. New research showed that - despite that - bumblebees can learn abstract rhythms. Not just respond instinctively. Actually learn them. Transfer them from vibration to light. Recognise them at different speeds.
We’ve also known for a while that bumblebees can do basic maths, understand the concept of zero, and even play.
A sesame seed.
It makes you wonder how much of what we assume requires a big brain - curiosity, pattern recognition, learning - is actually something far more fundamental. And it makes you wonder what children notice, when we give them the space to really look.
